I felt a lot of pressure and was uncomfortable with the strict rules and limitations of the Tyvek project. We had few choices of using materials. We could use only text which I am not familiar with and only one drawing material. For that reason I had hard time to coming up with ideas like choosing words and/or letters though we had motivation time such as answering the questions.

The local name for calligraphy is Seoye (서예) 書藝 in Korea, literally "the skill/criterion of writing". The calligraphy of East Asian characters is an important and appreciated aspect of Asian culture. East Asian calligraphy is normally regarded as one of the "arts" (Chinese 藝術 pinyin: yìshù, Japanese 芸術 geijutsu) in the countries where it is practiced. But there is actually a debate as to whether East Asian calligraphy is a discipline or an art. Indeed, both may be true.
As an art in Asia, calligraphy is also considered an art － 艺术 Chinese: yìshù, a relatively recent word meaning "art", where works are appreciated more or only for their aesthetic qualities.
The English word "Calligraphy" refers to that which is "beautiful writing", thus including both aspects.

I don't know if this really connects with what we are doing in a classroom. But it might be interesting
ReplyDeleteI love the youtube clip; it really felt like more of a dance in making the character with the music. The imperfect image made with such a large brush was art, and when the viewer is allowed to see the character as it is meant to be read, I was able to see so many profile portraits and figures. Beautiful!
